Hyundai Kona achieves maximum marks in Euro NCAP crash tests

New Hyundai Kona named safest B-SUV with maximum Euro NCAP five-star rating. This is partly due to the Hyundai SmartSense™ systems that support active safety and offer the highest level of driver assistance technologies. The car performed particularly well in three categories: driver and passenger safety, children and pedestrians.

On December 13, 2017, Hyundai's new Kona SUV was awarded the maximum five-star rating by the independent car safety organization Euro NCAP. This means that this car is one of the safest in its segment. This is due in particular to four features of Kona - taking care of adult occupants, transported children, pedestrians and systems supporting safe driving and preventing accidents.

"The result obtained proves that our latest SUV meets the highest safety standards. We are pleased, above all, because of the peace of mind of our customers," said Thomas A. Schmid, CEO of Hyundai Motor Europe. "The top result shows that Hundai not only offers them technologically innovative solutions, but also cares about the basic, most important issues for all customers - making them also easily accessible."

Hyundai SmartSense™ with the latest active safety systems

To meet stringent European safety standards, the new Kona has something called: Hyundai SmartSense™. It is a set of features that help in this prevent an accident from happening by anticipating, warning and reacting for the increasingly distracted modern driver.

The Lane Keeping System, preventing the car from unintentionally leaving it, was part of the car's great test result - passing all tests with flying colors. LKA - because that's what it's called (short for: Lane Keeping Assist), warns against a dangerous change of the car's position on the road (above 60 km/h). First, it alerts you with an audible alarm and visual warning signals before the car crosses a lane divider. If the driver does not react, he corrects the vehicle's trajectory himself, so that he safely continues in "his" lane.

FCA (from Forward Collision AvoidanceAssist), is another active system that prevents frontal collisions. It warns and brakes autonomously if necessary. It constantly scans the road in front of the car using radars and cameras. It also works in three stages, first warning with audio-visual signals, then autonomously braking to avoid a collision. In the last phase, it applies maximum braking force when it determines that an accident is certain. It does so to minimize damage. In this way, it supports drivers who, as studies show, very often brake too weakly before a collision with an obstacle occurs. What's good, the system is active from 8 km/h and also reacts to pedestrians.

In addition to the technologies tested by an independent body such as Euro NCAP, the new Kona offers many other life-enhancing "boosters". among others high beam and dipped beam assistant (which detects oncoming traffic so as not to dazzle drivers), a system that monitors driver fatigue, vehicles in the blind spot, and those that approach perpendicularly when reversing from a parking space.

Moreover, especially in our country, the optional four-wheel drive is useful, which significantly increases active safety when driving in winter and in the rain.
