YouTube and picture-in-picture on iPhone. How to enable it?

YouTube app for iOS 14 no picture-in-picture mode

New in iOS 14 includes picture-in-picture mode, an option to minimize the app playing the video while leaving a floating window with a preview above the rest of the interface elements. Of course, this is not a revolutionary solution and it could be used before, for example in the Netflix application, but only on iPads. Thanks to iOS 14, it became possible also on the iPhone, but one of the most popular applications, i.e. YouTube, did not support this function. According to previous reports, YouTube has been working on bringing picture-in-picture support to the app, and now - when it comes out - it's only available to users who pay for a YouTube Premium subscription.

This doesn't mean that other people can't use it - you need to initiate video playback in a different way than inside the application. Current solutions have a loophole, thanks to which it is possible to launch a floating window from YouTube in the browser version. The first scenario is a YouTube video added to the website, which we play without leaving the website. Then YouTube uses the default system player, which easily minimizes the web browser, leaving the picture-in-picture mode active (picture-in-picture).

Picture-in-picture from YouTube on iPhone. How to enable it?

It's clear that not all videos we want to watch will be on the pages we're viewing, so it's worth knowing that a similar trick can be applied to all other videos available on YouTube's website. It is not possible in such a simple way as before, because this option has already been blocked on the mobile version of YouTube. This didn't get the company much sympathy from users, but they found another way that still works.

Hey YouTube! You got a movie stuck between commercials!

Once you've selected the video you want to watch, click on "Request Desktop Version" in your web browser, which of course refers to what the YouTube website looks like. After loading the full page, almost unreadable on the screen of a mobile device, we turn on the video playback and after starting the full screen mode, you will be able to select the system option to switch to picture-in-picture mode.

It's obviously not very convenient, but only if you don't have an active YouTube Premium subscription. This costs PLN 23.99 per month and in addition to the picture-in-picture function gains the ability to play materials in the background, download them to the device's memory to play without access to the network. Advertisements, which according to many reports are becoming more and more insistent on YouTube, will also disappear. An additional benefit is access to the YouTube Music service for the same fee, and the service is an alternative to Spotify, TIDAL or Apple Music.

How do I enable picture-in-picture on YouTube on iOS?

Interestingly, YouTube doesn't see this as a core feature in its app, but allows premium subscribers to enable it as a test. By visiting www.youtube.com/new, go to the "Picture-in-picture on iOS devices" section and express your interest in the new feature. However, it should be borne in mind that this solution will work until October 31 and we do not know what will happen after that. Will YouTube roll out this feature to all users or will it remain available to YouTube Premium subscribers only.

If on your iPad or iPhone the steps described above do not work, try removing and reinstalling the YouTube app from the App Store - some users' reports indicate that this is needed to activate the picture-in-picture mode.
