»Key duplication based on the sound of opening the lock - Niebezpiecznik.pl -

A team from the University of Singapore has just shown how to add a key to someone's lock, based on the metallic clashes that the original key makes when inserting it into the lock. Scary, all the more that a smartphone dictaphone is enough to record rattling, and the technique works with Yale / Schlage keys, which are very popular in Poland.

Key duplication based on sounds, i.e. SpiKey

The technique of duplicating keys based on the sound they make when inserting them into the lock (a sample here) is based on software that analyzes the times between the characteristic metallic grinding.

On this basis, the researchers define a "carving" of the key, which they later print on a 3D printer. Here is a presentation showing what SpiKey is all about:

I have a lock on the door - what to do, how to live?

Insert silently and unevenly. One time slower, one time faster. This makes analysis difficult. It will also be a good idea to sing something while opening the door (the more it resembles a key in a lock, the better, do you know Venetian Snares?)

Oh, and make sure that when you open the door there's no packet of chips somewhere nearby, as someone might use it to wiretap remotely ...

PS. It is worth protecting against burglary not only your apartment, but also your smartphone - it often has more important information about us than what can be found at home. How to secure a smartphone? You will learn about it in this webinar that every mobile phone owner should see.
