PEUGEOT 508 HYBRID 225 E-EAT8 SW-TESTS AND FUEL CONTROL Plug-in hybrid

The plug-in hybrid drive, which was used in the Peugeot 508 Hybrid (PHEV), is the same as many other PSA group cars (and currently also Stellantis). We will find him M.in.in a larger model 3008 (EW.in its variety with four -wheel drive), in Opel Grandland or as part of the Citroen offer, e.g..C5 x model.Of course, some changes between individual implementation are, e.g..slightly different battery capacity. The common element is primarily a gasoline unit with a capacity of 1.6 l of the PureTech family. It may also be interesting that in Peugeot 308 Hybrid is present a slightly modernized version of this version of this hybrid drive. On the occasion of the smaller test, Peugeot will refer to the 508 hybrid discussed here.

Hybrid 225 versus Hybrid 180

The offer of hybrid drives for Peugeot 508 includes only one variant: Hybrid 225, but a weaker variety - Hybrid 180 - we can get to the 308 model. They differ in maximum power of the entire system, which is also partly due to the slightly lower set engine 1.6 l PureTech: 110 kW (150 HP) instead of 133 kW (180 HP).The rest of the parameters are the same.A more powerful variant is also available: Peugeot 508 Sport Engineered with an additional electric motor and 360 HP system power.About him will be a separate "episode".

The plug-in hybrid for Peugeot 508 is important because it is currently (January 2022) the only option for this car to have more than 96 kW (130 HP) power.Unfortunately, Puretech 180 and BlueHDi units with diesel with a capacity of 2 were removed from the offer.0 l.Other PureTech 130 and BlueHDI 130.

Peugeot 508 Hybrid 225 SW - hybrid drive specification

Although the electric motor offers 81.2 kW (110 HP), the manufacturer's data shows that the 11.6 kWh battery set is able to donate a maximum of 80 kW (109 HP).Although this is a slight difference, in this case completely irrelevant, it is worth taking this into mind, because there are cars (e.g..Four-wheel hybrids plug-in groups of PSA just) where the power of electric motors is realistically limited by the battery power.

Review of plug-in hybrid cars

The Peugeot 508 Hybrid test, in which you are just found, is part of the Plug-in hybrid cars review.I invite you to read articles on other cars of this kind, as well as to the framework publication discussing what plug-in hybrids (PHEV) are and what distinguishes them from the market.I encourage you to look here more often, because more cars are systematically attached.

Peugeot 508 Hybrid - hybrid drive in practice (electrical range and energy consumption)

A set of batteries in Peugeot 508 Hybrid PHEV has a capacity of 11.6 kWh (gross).Part of this is available for use in fully electric mode (so -called.net capacity). In the official specification I did not find information on this matter, but my measurements indicate ~ 8.5 kWh.

81 kW (110 HP) electric motor in non-emission mode, so alone, it drives the car quite efficiently-0-50 km/h in about 4.8 seconds. This is enough to move the pace of other drivers around the city, and even slightly faster than their significant part.In my opinion, the engine power was well selected for the size and mass of Peugeot 508 Hybrid.Of course, there is always a combustion engine in the "waiting room" with the help of which full power is obtained - 165 kW (225 HP) - which will allow you to efficiently overtake, for example.truck on the route.Energy consumption in electrical mode is even quite low for a plug-in hybrid car: around 19 kWh/100 km in the city.Energy consumption test and range:

As always, I point out, fast fast driving in electrical mode, although possible (maximum speed in this mode reaches 140 km/h), is pointless and is inefficient from the point of view of total fuel and energy consumption.Among other things, for this reason in the standard (hybrid) driving mode Peugeot 508 Hybrid SW above speed ~ 80 km/h turns the internal combustion engine.

Obtained 46 km in electrical mode around the city means that a statistical European is able to drive the vast majority of daily distance without the use of fuel (usually up to 50 km).Unfortunately, electricity may be missing a little earlier in more difficult conditions, e.g..in winter and during faster driving. The average cost of covering 50 km in the city will therefore be PLN 8.5 (PLN 7 per energy, taking into account charging efficiency, and PLN 1.5 per fuel, counting 0.75 for 1 kWh and PLN 6 for 1 l gasoline).

The Peugeot 508 hybrid hybrid system management system adapts how to operate mainly to the speed at which we want to go.The area in which we are located does not matter to him.The internal combustion engine - in the default hybrid driving mode - turns on at about 80 km/h.After removing the gas, the car almost "sails" (with gentle energy recovery).A higher level of recuperation can be obtained by activating the "B" mode with the gearbox shifter or simply by pressing the brake. These are the only options available.Even by activating the increased recuperation mode ("B"), Peugeot 508 Hybrid will not stop fully without using the brake, but you can "use one pedal" to drive around the city, and the brake pedal can be used only for full stop. The power of recuperation in the aforementioned "B" mode is slightly greater than what we know from "engine braking" in internal combustion cars.Unfortunately, the "B" mode is forgotten after each change of direction.

Peugeot 508 Hybrid behaves like a classic car with an automatic transmission. After releasing the brake at a stop, the car will start to roll (regardless of the driving mode), to stop (even in "B" mode) it is necessary to use the brake.508 Generally will not go back on the hill.I used the word "generally" because the feature of this gearbox is, unfortunately, that sometimes standing in a traffic jam on a hill, the car can go back a few centimeters before it starts to go forward. It is not dangerous, but it can scare someone who stands behind us.

Peugeot 508 SW Hybrid - fuel consumption

The software of the Peugeot 508 hybrid hybrid system in the default driving mode (hybrid) strives first until the energy from the batteries (to the minimum level), and the internal combustion engine turns mainly on when we expect higher power or when we want to go at a higher speed (above ~ 80km/h).As a result: if our route includes a expressway, it may turn out that we will reach our destination with some supply of energy in batteries. After it is exhausted (to the minimum level), the car goes into a classic hybrid mode, in which the city's consumption is 5.9 l/100 km (test data).

Fuel consumption in Peugeot 508 Hybrid 225 SW in the city starting with fully charged batteries:

Declared fuel consumption-1.6-1.3 l/100 km-so it is available, but on condition that the distance traveled will not be greater than ~ 63 km.Of course, assuming one, full charging of batteries before leaving.

Approximate costs of traveling a given distance around the city in Peugeot 508 Hybrid SW assuming a fuel price of PLN 6 for 1 liter of gasoline and the cost of electricity of PLN 0.75 for 1 kWh (this is the average cost of charging from the home network), and also taking into account one fullCharging for a given distance is carried out (fuel cost / cost of electricity):

Fuel consumption with exhausted batteries

If the battery current "ends" (no fully electric mode will be available) or, for example,.In a situation where we just forgot to charge before leaving, the fuel consumption will be as follows:

The results obtained are quite good, although typical for this segment. The results of Peugeot 508 Hybrid SW are slightly better than the BMW 330E XDrive Touring fourth wheels, similar to Skoda Octavia RS IV.At the same time, hybrid (but not plug-in) Toyota Corolla TS with 2.0 l hybrid on the route is only a little more economical.Of course, Toyota distances all hybrids of this size in terms of fuel consumption in the city.

At the same time, the results obtained are very comparable - on the route - with those presented by Peugeot 508 PureTech 180.Of course, the hybrid version has an advantage around the city, which translates into almost 1 l/100 km less fuel consumption.

With a 43-liter tank, fuel will be enough at about 650-700 km of driving at an average speed of 120 km/h (also taking into account the previously charged battery).Increasing speed to 140 km/h, refueling will be needed every 500-550 km.

Hybrid drive in Peugeot 508 Hybrid can be seen perfectly during urban driving with "empty" batteries. Finally, for 73% of the driving time, the internal combustion engine was turned off, which is a fairly average result, but in no case can it be included in the weak.

The computer does not book too much energy for riding with limited exhaustion of the batteries. As a result, it is relatively very often difficult to start in the urban traffic jam without the activation of the internal combustion engine. When the charge level is slightly rising, the Peugeot 508 Hybrid, in turn, not only eagerly moves but even accelerates to a speed of 40-60 km/h without the use of an internal combustion engine, which leads to another limit discharge.Economical ride therefore requires some practice.

Charging Peugeot 508 Hybrid

Like all other plug-in hybrids, PEUGEOT 508 Hybrid should be charged from an external power source-only then is the sense of using such a car.Charging can be done with a maximum power of 7.4 kW, and "to full" will be completed in an hour and 45 minutes.Changing to a standard 230 V socket will extend the charging time to just over 5 hours. It is enough to make the car fully charged the next day.Full supplementation of energy (from 0 to 100%) from a home socket costs about PLN 7 (standard tariff, about PLN 0.75 for 1 kWh).

Hybrid driving impressions PEUGEOT 508 HYBRID

When driving calmly, the on -board computer in Peugeot 508 Hybrid tries mainly to use an electric drive. The internal combustion engine turns on at about 80 km/h or when the driver expects access to greater power of the drive system.A triangle is visible on the driver's screen, and more precisely on the power use indicator, after which the internal combustion unit is activated.Without it, the 508 hybrid drive offers 81 kW (110 HP) of power, which is enough to efficiently move on urban roads.Changing gear gearbox.Unfortunately, the more we go, the more noticeable these changes are.

When pressing the acceleration pedal, the gasoline unit turns on much more often, which is usually not associated with an oversized delay. This, however, is present and results mainly from the tuning of the gearbox itself.Often, the reduction to a lower gear was associated with inadequately long waiting, even when the internal combustion engine was active. The situation is strongly improved by the sports mode, where we do not avoid the occasional jerks of the gearbox, but at least the time of the power system response to a more powerful addition of gas by the driver is clearly shorter.Unfortunately, the fact that in this mode the gasoline engine is also active at a stop means that it is not really suitable for driving around the city.

A violent start in hybrid mode without preparation is quite lively and dynamic, although there is no question of "pulling" as it was, for example.at BMW 330E.A sudden kick in the acceleration pedal while driving also does not generate a sudden impact on the back. The Peugeot 508 Hybrid drive system in such a situation rather gently regulates the power given to the wheels. However, this should not be treated as a defect, it is rather a feature.

Interestingly, the effectiveness and efficiency of hybrid drive 508 Hybrid is quite good with really sharp driving.Although in sports mode during strong braking there is no aggressive reduction.Manual gear shifting is possible, but it is really needed, because this does not translate into better drive reactions usually or speed. It is also worth noting that the supply of energy that remained after the theoretical exhaustion of the batteries (the electrical mode is not available) is quite large, which translates into a lack of a decrease in the acceleration rate relative to the situation when the batteries were charged:

Peugeot 508 HYbrid 225 e-EAT8 SW – test zasięgu i zużycia paliwa hybrydy Plug-In

Such a tuning of the drive means that when driving around the city we have a choice of hybrid mode, in which reactions to deeper adding gas are often associated with a noticeable delay, or sports mode in which the delays are clearly smaller and the lively drive of the drive is clearly higher, but the combustion is clearly worse, because the internal combustion engine does not turn off even at a stop.Peugeot 508 Hybrid feels good during a really calm and economical travel and during sharp driving.Between these states there is ... unfortunately.

The soundproofing of the internal combustion engine is rather typical for this segment. At low speed it is slightly audible, more loud with higher. The color itself is typical for an unit with this type of capacity, nothing irritating, but also nothing racial.Sometimes only the switching on the internal combustion engine generates a shock felt in the passenger cabin, typical of older cars with a stop-start system, which in the hybrid plug-in should not be rather.

The Peugeot 508 Hybrid driver has access to a limited set of information on the operation of the drive. There is an information on the available range in electrical mode (digital indicator every ... 2 km, only even numbers), the level of charge level, but the average energy consumption is shown only on the central multimedia screen (along with the chart in time, every 5 minutes). The problem, however, is that it works in a cycle from turning on the car and cannot be reset by manually. The "energy meter" itself does not have a precise scale, only the ECO and Power area and the triangle indicating the border after which the internal combustion engine will start.

Four driving modes are available: electric, hybrid, comfort and sports. Two middle ones differ only in the condition of the suspension (if it has adaptive shock absorbers) and a certain change in the way the gearbox or engine works. In an electric, obviously, it is forced to ride irritable (then the lamp hidden in the reverse mirror is shining, visible from the outside), which of course can be "overwritten" using the "kickdown" function - but plus. The sports mode activates a permanent combustion engine, of course also changes the settings of the entire drive.Driving in this mode, however, does not mean forced battery charging to a certain level.I am writing about it, because in many hybrids plug-in is so.In the options in the main menu, charging can be activated (EW.Maintaining the level of charging) batteries while driving. There are three options to choose from: up to 10, 20 km of electrical range or up to the maximum. In such a variant, the internal combustion engine turns off at a stop, which I include.

Peugeot 508 Hybrid SW every day

From the outside, the hybrid Peugeot 508 is basically indistinguishable from other engine versions, especially if it has the markings removed. You can only know by an additional flap on the left side of the vehicle, under which the fuel filler is hidden, but the battery charging connector. This is basically the only difference. The situation is similar in the middle, where the hybrid can be recognized by other "clocks" of the driver and the fact that the jack of the automatic transmission has an additional "B" mode next to the standard "D".As in the case of many other plug-in hybrids, so the Peugeot 508 Hybrid can be rode without realizing that it is a plug-in hybrid, of course with the right dose of ignorance.

The trunk has a capacity of 530 l (Peugeot 508 Hybrid SW) or 487 for the sedan version.Interestingly, it is the same capacity as in purely combustion versions.

As for its own mass, the hybrid versions of the Peugeot 508 weigh around 1720-1745 (Sedan-SW), while fully combustion counterparts 1400-1430 kg.The weight gain is therefore significant. It's so good that the load capacity is only ~ 60 kg smaller.During normal driving, we are unlikely. However, when we start hybrid 508, press hard into the wall, there is some nervousness of the back and the interventions of electronics significant.

The brakes are effective and stop the car over a short distance. However, their resistance to really paddling is limited. There was no difference in the reflection of the braking depending on the participation of recuperation, and any tugs resulted from the transmission rather. The steering is surprisingly direct and precise, although very light, and thus strongly limited the amount of information about what is happening with the front wheels. However, this is quite sufficient for everyday and safe driving.Attention is drawn to a really small turning radius!Comparable to what we have in many rear -wheel drive cars.

I have comments on the way driving directions are switched. It is not even about the speed of this process, which is typical for cars with a conventional gearbox, but about the fact that Peugeot 508 Hybrid can still go in the "old" direction after changing the gear ratio, which should not take place and may surprise in the parking lot whenWe will maneuver by car quickly.

The Peugeot 508 Hybrid suspension is a fairly good compromise between the comfortable character of the car and the rigidity of the sporty aspiration of this model. The optional adaptive shock absorbers have a significant impact on the reception. The larger breaches in the road are of course more noticeable, but the stability at the corner with the folded road is right.Generally: the level of comfort is quite high, also acoustic.

Inside Peugeot 508 Hybrid

The Peugeot 508 Hybrid cabin is basically no different from other versions of this car with a conventional drive. The only distinguishing feature is a slightly different set of digital driver indicators and an additional driving mode chosen with the gearbox shifter: "B" next to the standard "D".

The overall quality of the finish is quite good. Most of the things we touch are made of quite a good test of materials. We have the skin under the elbows, for parts of the door, the handle for closing it or even on the bacon of the central tunnel. There is a material on the pit, but soft and pleasant.Mating is generally good, and the amount of shiny plastic ("piano black") is very limited, for which a big plus.

The steering wheel is typical for the Peugeot brand small and placed relatively low, which aims to visually place the driver's indicators above its wreath. Not everyone will suit everyone, but it can be accustomed to it and conveniently operated, although sometimes the cost is that the lower part of the display will be slightly covered.

The multimedia system is unnecessarily confusing places, but you can get used to it.The speed of operation is not the highest flights, but here you can also live with it, especially if we do not use the on -board navigation system. The most important functions can be called using the keys at the screen, and some air conditioning options are separated into a separate set of touch buttons.

The driver's seat Peugeot 508 Hybrid has a fairly wide range of adjustment and works quite well on the long route. The option is a massage function.Side holding on turns is not the best, but it is enough to a car, which is not very sporty. You can choose a fully leather version or with a material finish of the seat and backrest.Personally, I would choose the latter option. The visibility is quite ok, although the relatively small glass in the back limits the view to the back a bit.

As for the amount of space inside, the Peugeot 508 is not masterfully spacious, but for people with a height to about 1.9 m is enough.I am 1.84 m tall and in front to the roof housing I have a few centimeters of space.Sitting "behind myself" I was about 4-5 cm on my knees and about the same above my head. It's just that the roof on the left is quite close.

Modern driver safety and support systems

Peugeot 508 by standards 2021/2022 is no longer richly equipped when it comes to driver safety and support systems. There are, of course, warning systems and, if necessary, intervening in the braking system, but the dead field monitoring system works to a limited extent, and the warning system of transverse movement during reversing is not at all.An interesting fact for this is the availability of the Night Vision system (option for PLN 7,000), which we will not see in competition cars:

The reversing camera has sufficient quality, but there is no 360 degree camera (only its simulation), which in this segment (D with aspiration to Premium) is in my opinion a great oversight.

The assistant of driving in a traffic jam and semi -destonna driving on fast roads is present, but this is a rather simpler version, which actually copes only in very standardized situations like a creeping traffic jam or just driving a highway:

Price

Peugeot 508 starts from the amount of ~ 142 thousand.PLN for the version with the PureTech 130 engine. For a plug-in hybrid (hybrid 225 e-eat8) you have to give a minimum of ~ 181 thous.zloty.MO strong retrofitting, the price increases to over 200 thousand.zloty, a przebić można nawet 230 tys.zloty.

A close rival, or Skoda Octavia RS IV after full retrofitting, is unlikely to exceed 200,000.zloty.

Summary and opinion

Plug-in hybrid drive that drives Peugeot 508 Hybrid performs quite well and presents a relatively economical character, the greatest merit of which is the economical Puretech engine. The whole works quite well during dynamic tests.Perhaps the performance is not thunderous (8.3 s in a 0-100 km/h sprint) for a systemic power of 165 kW (225 HP), but in daily operation it is sufficient level, especially if we activate sports mode before dynamic driving before dynamic driving.

In some aspects of the hybrid in Peugeot 508, however, she could present a better level.First of all, the gearbox too often gets torn, the method of energy management with the boundary exhaustion of the batteries could also be more refined (and this was done in Peugeot 308 Hybrid). However, it would not matter if the price of such a configurated model 508 was not so high.

Soon the hybrid Peugeot 308 test, in which a lot of things have been improved!:)
