They are far from unstable, leaky glazing with small panes, wide profiles and clear transverse divisions. Today's balcony doors allow you to admire the views and blur the boundaries between the interior and exterior of the house. You can choose from several types of glazing, with different parameters and methods of opening.

Balcony windows: tilt and turn

Depending on your needs, you can install tilt and turn, sliding, folding or lift-slide windows at the balcony. The first is the most commonly used door that opens inwards and has a tilt option. They are available in single or double leaf versions. The downside is a high threshold of about 5 cm (sometimes you can find windows with a 2 cm threshold). Tilt and turn sashes can weigh up to 150 kg and have exposed or hidden hinges. They give the possibility of unsealing and, which is a great advantage, repealing. Some are additionally equipped with a brake that locks the open window in the selected position.

Balcony windows: sliding

Sliding windows, on the other hand, have the advantage that they do not take up space when opened. They also give the opportunity to install larger glazing, the weight of which can reach 200 kg, as well as obtain a wide exit. The window segments in the open position overlap parallel to each other, and in the closed position they almost form one line. This is due to the rails mounted on the frame and the trolleys connected to the profile. In this type of windows you can meet a standard or a low threshold.

Balcony windows: folding

Folded windows with a low threshold, which are connected with the elements that make up the wall, take up little space after opening. When closed, they line up. They can open to take up space outside or inside the room.

Balcony windows: lift and slide

The balcony lift and slide doors are equipped with two parallel rails and fittings enabling the opening of very heavy and spacious sashes. They can even handle a single window weight of 400 kg. After turning the handle, the movable sash rises and then allows it to slide without using excessive force. The four-element model with sliding doors on two sides gives the possibility of obtaining a very wide passageway after opening.

Big windows, which are what?

The most popular windows are tilt and turn windows with profiles made of PVC. The largest area of glazing of this type, with hidden hinges, is 3 m2, and 2.5 m2 with standard hinges. With a maximum height of 2.7 m and a width of 1.7 m, PVC glazing is generally split to stiffen the structure. The division is made due to the lower stiffness of the plastic. Windows with wooden profiles are characterized by greater stiffness, which is why until recently only they were made in large formats without divisions. Today, however, PVC glazing is available with glued-in panes permanently connected to the profile, which allows the use of large glass panes.

Sliding hardware allows the production of windows in standard apartments, the entire height from the ceiling to the floor, ie 2.7 m. When using double trolleys, or tandem, they allow the installation of a wide, 3-meter sash.

Folding windows can cover a wall 12 m wide and 4 m high, while the lift-and-slide door is a 19-meter-high wall 3.3 m high. The latter have a leaf width of 6, and sometimes even 10 m. after sliding the windows open, it remained completely free, without a pillar.

Maintenance of balcony windows

As the fittings of balcony sashes wear out, they should be taken care of so that they will serve for many years. When the handle starts to move stiffly and there is a problem with closing, it is a sign that intervention is required. Since the cascade casement windows have a tendency to drop, they need to be adjusted. To do this, remove the protective cap, open the window and tighten the screw with an Allen key. First we adjust the lower hinge, then the upper hinge. When closing the window, we check that it has risen to the required height and that it closes easily. If horizontal adjustment is needed, in terms of the distance between the leaves, use a flat wrench to tighten or slightly unscrew the screw nut in the upper opening of the frame.

In sliding windows, special attention should be paid to rails and carriages. They must remain clean, any debris must be removed to allow the wing to move freely. Every six months, it is necessary to use a vacuum cleaner to clean the space between the fixed elements, and the lower guide rails - every month. It is worth rubbing the seals with silicone.

The opening mechanisms in all types of windows should be lubricated with technical petroleum jelly, machine oil, silicone oil or other grease. It is enough to apply a few drops through the hole in the fitting and make a few movements of the handle to distribute the grease inside. Maintenance should be repeated regularly.
