The largest school in Złotoryja has been begging for modernization for years. Leaking windows, poorly insulated walls with cracked and damaged plaster, a corroded central heating installation that causes heat losses (which has not undergone major repairs since the building was built and is not adapted to its current needs) - these are just the biggest problems of the facility at ul. Wilcza, which are driving up energy bills more and more.

In building B, i.e. the former junior high school, opened in 1995, there are classrooms where children freeze during lessons on colder days, because cold air penetrates through the cracks in the windows. It is true that the most degraded ones, which were in such a bad technical condition that they posed a threat to the safety of students, were replaced by the City Hall in Złotoryja over the last two years, but there was not enough money for the rest.

The second building - A, i.e. the older one, built in the 1960s, which was already insulated more than 10 years ago, does not look very good either. Due to the lack of flashings on the cornices, water floods the façade during rainfall and creates stains, fungus appeared and micro-cracks appeared on the plaster, which lead to dampness of the insulating layer and a decrease in its thermal properties.

A year ago, the "three" facility underwent an energy audit, which indicated what needed to be improved. A thermal modernization project was created, for which the town hall in Złotoryja received funding. A tender for construction works is to be announced soon.

Most of the works will concern the former gymnasium building. In addition to insulating the external walls and the flat roof, through which the most heat escapes, the windows and entrance doors will be partially replaced. In turn, in building A, the façade is to be cleaned and protected against microbiological damage, on which flashing will also appear. The project also provides for the replacement of the central heating system and lighting fixtures with energy-saving, LED ones. Photovoltaic panels with a total capacity of nearly 50 kilowatt-tops will be installed on the roofs of both buildings.

– The biggest challenge for us is the replacement of radiators and installations. This is a huge undertaking, I hope that it will be carried out during the holidays, so that it does not interfere with the conduct of classes - emphasizes Danuta Boroch, director of Primary School No. 3.

All these works should reduce the demand for electricity and heat, which will be additionally helped by the installation of systems monitoring its consumption. It will get warmer in the classrooms, the "three" will also contribute to reducing dust emissions into the atmosphere. Moreover, further destruction of the façade will be stopped. The aesthetic value is also important - after insulation and microbiological protection, the entire building will get a new color scheme.

- We hope that our heating bills will decrease significantly. At the moment, in the winter months, we pay WPEC about 30-35 thousand. PLN per month for thermal energy. We are also very happy that thanks to the photovoltaic installation we will have our own electricity, which will significantly allow us to become independent from the energy sector, for example in the production of hot water - explains the school's headmistress.

In addition to thermal insulation, the project provides for the adaptation of the SP 3 building to the needs of the disabled. In the older part, by the internal stairs, an electric stair platform will be installed, which will allow wheelchair users to access the ground floor. In turn, the ground floor of building B will be accessible via the ramp, which will appear next to the external stairs.

The thermal modernization of the "three" is one of the major investment tasks in this year's budget of Złotoryja. In November, the city received a grant of PLN 1.7 million from EU funds under the Regional Operational Programme.

The total value of the project is estimated at nearly PLN 3.7 million.
