Buildings in Poland are far from energy efficiency. Here comes the Wave of Renovation

The European Green Deal assumes the fight against pollutant emissions in construction. Homes and public buildings are responsible for around 40 percent. energy consumption and 36 percent. pollutant emissions in Europe. The Renovation Wave is intended to increase the level of energy efficiency of our homes through widespread modernization. Today, the indicators are far from ideal - according to estimates, around 70 percent. residential buildings in Poland are energy inefficient.

The report "The wave of renovation as a chance for the development of Poland after the pandemic" shows that in our country as much as 70 percent. out of 5 million single-family houses, they do not meet energy efficiency standards. As a result, heating a standard house with an area of 118 m 2 , equipped with a coal boiler and old doors and windows, amounts to approx. zloty. As a result of thermo-modernization, this cost may drop even to 1.8 thousand. zloty. The Renovation Wave is expected to increase the renovation rate at least twice by 2030.

Andrzej Kielar, managing director of ROCKWOOL Polska, explains that most of the buildings that should be modernized are located in places with good infrastructure, in city centers, in well-developed suburbs, where the infrastructure has been around for years and where we do not have to recreate it . There are kindergartens, schools and other facilities in these areas, but a lack of well-insulated buildings.

70 percent residential buildings do not meet energy efficiency standards Most of them were built between 1918 and 1988, and every third has no thermal insulation at all

- The building renovation wave will have a very large impact on air quality in Poland. We know very well that the vast majority of smog, i.e. pollution in the air, is associated with low emissions. However, this low emission is mainly created by single-family buildings - adds Kielar.

On the other hand, Piotr Chrzanowski, an analyst at WiseEuropa, notes that universal thermal modernization creates an opportunity to reduce the phenomenon of energy poverty. It is estimated that, across Europe, it affects up to 34 million people who cannot afford to heat their home. On the other hand, in Poland, this phenomenon affects up to 1.3 million households and over 12 percent. population, which translates into about 4.6 million people.

We will gain clean air, the economy - new jobs

The Renovation Wave may become a driving force in the construction sector as well as services and devices related to the thermal modernization of old and ineffective construction, in particular after the COVID-19 pandemic. The demand for modernization may translate into the creation of even several hundred thousand new jobs.

The renovation strategy is a great opportunity for the development of companies providing renovation services and companies producing devices and solutions that increase energy efficiency in homes.

- Widespread thermal modernization of buildings will have a positive impact on the economy in at least some aspects. The first are manufacturers of construction products, because the demand for their products will surely increase. We can also talk about creating new jobs in green specializations that help save energy - comments Szymon Firląg, president of the Association of Employers of Materials Producers for the Construction Industry.

As the reports of the Institute for Structural Research and the European Climate Foundation show, as a result of the widespread thermal modernization supported by financial instruments in Poland, up to 100,000 jobs may be created each year. new jobs directly related to construction and 200 thousand. in other sectors of the economy.

35 million buildings in Europe to be refurbished

Let us recall that the European Commission published in October 2020 a strategy for the Renovation Wave to improve the energy performance of buildings. The EC intends to carry out a general modernization of buildings so that the renovation will contribute to greater energy efficiency and more efficient use of resources. It is estimated that by 2030, 35 million buildings could be renovated and up to 160,000 jobs could be created. additional green jobs in the construction sector. It will be a big challenge, as 85 percent. buildings in the EU, however, were built more than 20 years ago, and 85-95% of of buildings is expected to remain standing in 2050.
