The photograph that symbolizes the events of December 1970 on the coast is the one where anonymous men carry the body of a young, killed shipyard worker, Zbyszek Godlewski, down the street of Gdynia. It was about his death that the famous ballad with the refrain "Janek Wiśniewski has fallen!" was written later. One of the men carrying the dead Zbyszek was Henryk Mierzejewski, my interlocutor.

How old were you then? You were probably as young as Zbyszek?

Meanwhile, at night, the pacification took place on Kapitańska Street.

Today, not everyone can know what "health paths" were, so let's explain that this is an ironic term for torture used in the People's Republic of Poland by the militia and the Security Service, especially against opposition activists, consisting in beating a prisoner running between two lines of beatings with batons. But what happened next?

What was Janek Wiśniewski's death like?

The photo shows five men carrying the body of the deceased. Which one is you?

Eleven years later, another historic December has arrived.

Thank you for the interview.
